Portion sizes and pricing swing widely across this group, from a $10 lunch bowl to a multi-course tasting menu at an upscale sushi counter, so checking recent reviews and photos is more useful than the price range alone. In Palo Alto, dinner reservations for popular izakaya, hot pot and Korean BBQ spots fill up on Friday and Saturday nights, so booking ahead or arriving at opening is worth it. Many restaurants across California run daily lunch specials on weekdays that are not listed on the dinner menu, so it is worth asking. Halal, vegetarian and gluten-free options vary a lot by kitchen; call ahead if you have a dietary restriction rather than assuming the menu will note it.

This is a taste of Japan, without being there. Yutori is as close as it gets for 1) atmosphere 2) landscaping, and most importantly 3) the coffee, pastry, and lunch selections that is common in Japan, but rare in the Bay Area. The front is a cafe with beverages and pastries. There is a back “market” section where you can order food or grab from their cold and hot premade section. We opted to wait for the shrimp tempura burger. The burger was big enough to bite comfortable, enough condiments to compliment without spilling over or making a mess, and the shrimp inside was seasoned appropriate. The tempura was dark (possibly an indication that the oil in the deep fryer needs to be changed?) I would have preferred a lighter colored finish…but what would I know! It still tasted great :) The place is busy and packed, so please be prepared to wait or just grab and go from their premade section. Definitely worth it and glad they are here to provide a taste of Japan in the Bay Area.

The layout is a bit strange. There is more outdoor seating than indoor but on a rainy day or cold day it could be tough to find seating. My favorite had to be the sesame chocolate cookie. The sesame scone was a bit bland and dry. We got the Hojita goma latte. It was very flavorful but very heavy on the cream. It felt like a milkshake than a latte and it's served cold only. Tomagoyaki Sando was good but it is $15 for a tiny sandwich . I would skip this next time. The almond croissant was missing its crispy and flaky. It felt more like an almond cake. It wasn't sweet at all and very tasty. They have a store in the back and bentos and sandwich to go. But again everything is high priced.

Update: Went on a Wednesday afternoon and there was only a couple people in line for drinks and no line for the sandwiches. I got the chirashi bento and it was good. Still pricey ($35) but better than their strawberry sando. I think this place is only worth it for their lunch food when there’s no line. Otherwise it’s not worth standing in line for Definitely overhyped. Came here on a Sunday around 8:30 AM to 9 AM and there was already a line starting to creep out the door. Luckily there wasn’t a huge crowd yet so I was able to park in the back. But I can see how parking can be hard if there’s a big crowd because the parking lot is small. We waited around 30 minutes to place an order. They’re slow at processing orders but their store and their deli is really nice to look at all the knickknacks. The drinks came out relatively fast though after we ordered. So it seems at least for breakfast it just takes a while for you to place an order with them. Also note they don’t have any sushi at 9 AM. I think it starts around 10:30 AM when they start lunch food. But they have drinks and pastries available. And some prepackaged Japanese deli food. The food was average and the prices were wa

Yummy drinks and desserts! For drinks I liked both the early grey matcha and hojicha goma latte. We got them both unsweetened and they were still good. For the pastries we tried the matcha financier, black sesame scone, kinako miso banana bread, and sesame chocolate chip cookie. My ranking was the kinako banana bread, matcha financier, black sesame scone, sesame cookie. The slightly salty miso and caramelized upper crust on the banana bread was soo good. The matcha financier texture was more similar to butter tteok/butter mochi with a chewy outside which I really enjoy. The black sesame scone wasn't bad but I prefer my scones denser vs cakey, their scones are more the cakey style. The black sesame flavor was definitely there though! The cookie was also not bad, I just personally don't like too much chocolate in my cookies, but the sesame seeds added a lot. I came on a Thursday afternoon and there were still a decent amount of people but didn't have to wait too long. Maybe 5-10 minutes. I definitely wouldn't say it's worth coming on a weekend and wait more than 30 minutes though. I wanted to try their deli items too but we didn't have enough people to share, maybe next time. The

One of the most popular matcha cafe in the Bay right now, known not only for its matcha but also for their Japanese lunch boxes and sandos. Be prepared for a long wait, we waited in line for about 45 minutes (to order drink), and there’s almost always a line (but no line for food). They have a great selection of savory dishes. We ordered the Premium Aburi Chirashi Don ($35), and it was excellent, fresh, great-quality fish. For drinks, we tried the Kuro Latte, Kyoto Latte, Earl Grey Matcha Latte, and Ceremonial Matcha Latte. They leaned a bit more toward the bitter and sweet side, and I personally wished the matcha flavor was stronger and more recognizable. The cafe itself is beautiful, with a Japanese garden and a spacious interior. However, because it’s so popular, seating still feels limited during busy hours. Overall, I’d definitely come back, especially to try their sandos. I actually enjoyed their savory food even more than the drinks.
